Youth Peer Mentor and Engagement Coordinator

Position Summary:

This position will assume an integral role in the ongoing development and operations of the Tanner Steffler Foundation (TSF).  The Youth Peer Mentor and Engagement Coordinator will bring a youth perspective, utilize youth and family engagement strategies, and provide direction, assistance and guidance to youth programming associated with TSF.  In addition, this position will lead the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) through meeting planning and facilitation.  Support will be provided to the Youth Peer Mentor and Engagement Coordinator via supervision from the TSF team.


Youth Mentor – Secondary School Program

  • Primary interface is directly with students, guidance counselors, mental health and wellness coaches and administrators
  • Help facilitate peer to peer groups
  • Be a warm shoulder, good listener and promote student voice
  • Spend time with students individually and engage in activities that the individual enjoys
  • Act as ombudsman to bridge mental health supports
  • In partnership with school staff, help facilitate events that promote and foster a sense of belonging
  • Outside of face to face time with students, additional time will be dedicated to participation in committee meetings and attend standing meetings with the mental health lead and administrators of the schools

Youth Engagement

  • Promote a stigma free youth culture for mental health and addiction
  • Facilitate Youth Advisory Council (YAC) in-person and online bi-weekly meetings
    • Prepare agendas for YAC meetings, record attendance for purpose of honorariums 
  • Plan and organize YAC social events and fundraisers 
  • Monitor YAC group chat and send relevant information through that chat as well as through email; respond to YAC members who message privately through the chosen app or email
  • Engage new YAC members and respond to inquiries regarding YAC
  • Act as a liaison between YAC and TSF staff
  • Participate in Youth Panel Discussions with YAC and support them in preparing the discussion  
  • Work alongside the Social Media Coordinator to prepare youth panel discussion posts for social media platforms and TSF website; create marketing materials for the YAC and TSF;  create public education presentations and deliver messaging that each local school, community organization and group is seeking 
  • Engage with youth reaching out for the purpose of hosting events, public education ideas, third party events etc.


Youth Peer Support Program Planning and Navigation

  • Assist with the planning, development, evaluation, processes and research initiatives related to the delivery of Youth Peer Support Services, ensuring the youth perspective.
  • Work collaboratively with other TSF team members to facilitate work related to the peer support steering committee 
  • Act as a resource person or an advocate to assist individuals in obtaining information and accessing services and supports which are deemed needed; including but not limited to supporting reintegration into school, work and social activities; promote opportunities for increased independence; assist in prioritizing needs/areas of consideration and development of short-term plans that address client priorities



  • Monitor the TSF phone two days per week and as otherwise required
  • Assist with grant writing and opportunities for grants and donations
  • Assist with planning and organizing TSF public events
  • Attend professional development opportunities that are relevant to TSF’s mission, vision and values and keep up to date with social issues pertaining to mental health and addiction in Huron and Perth county, Ontario and Canada as a whole
  • Other duties may be required upon TSF development & business plan



Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education – Candidates must be currently enrolled in or have completed a post-secondary program in social services with exploration in the mental health and problematic substance use field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hold Peer Support training, or have a willingness to participate in a Peer Support training program designated by TSF.


Necessary skills and Experience:

  • 1 – 3 years experience working directly with youth populations;
  • Understanding of Peer Support/Peer Mentorship;
  • Experience in program planning and evaluation;
  • A high degree of flexibility and demonstrated ability to re-prioritize tasks based on project need;
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Remarkable listener, empathetic and exhibit a high level of confidentiality;
  • A strong collaborative approach and interpersonal skills, and ability to build and maintain relationships with youth, community partners, and project stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Suicide and crisis intervention and prevention skills; 
  • Experience in committee work, with potential to Chair meetings is an asset;
  • Experience with the mental health platform Greenspace is an asset; 
  • Facilitation experience is an asset;


Special consideration will be given to candidates with:

  • Knowledge of mental health and addiction service providers, as well as other social agencies in the Huron and Perth area that support youth in reaching their short and long term goals.


Position Requirements:

  • Familiarity of both Huron and Perth county;
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and vehicle;
  • Willingness to travel within Huron and Perth county;
  • Required to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends;
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (CPIC) and Police Criminal Record Check;


Hours of Work: 35 hours/week.  Some flexibility to work from home with a minimum of 3 days per week required at the Seaforth office – 32b Centennial Dr., Seaforth, ON.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the range: $43,680 – $47,320

Contract Duration:  12 months
